Black Opal from Chambers of the Black Hand
Lightning Ridge is the home of Australia’s National Gemstone – The Black Opal.
New South Wales already has the Waratah as its State Flower, the Blue Groper as the State Fish, the Kookaburra as the State Bird and the Platypus as the State Animal.
And in April 2008, the premier Morris Iemma made the Black Opal the State’s Gem Emblem, which was a wonderful coup for Lightning Ridge
Occasionally, one’s brain simply can’t believe the image one’s eyes behold. What artist Ron Canlin extracts from the walls of an opal mine amid the eccentricity of Lightning Ridge, is such an image.
